Play all audio recordingsAdrian Mocanu is a composer born in 1989 in Kyiv. He was studying music composition at the National Music Academy of Ukraine and carried out his postgraduate studies at Centro Superior de Enseñanza Musical Katarina Gurska in Madrid, Spain. He received the ‘Gaude Polonia’ scholarship of the Ministry of Culture of Poland and was taking classes at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw in 2019, and in 2022 was granted a scholarship of the Academy of Fine Arts of Paris for an artistic residency at Casa de Velázquez - the Academy of France in Madrid. He became the composer-in-residence of the Juventudes Musicales of Spain for the 2023/24 season and carried out an artistic residency at The Green Room for Performing Artists in Cologne. In 2024, he was granted the Weltoffenes Berlin Fellowship of the Senate of Berlin for a one-year collaboration with ensemble Maulwerker.
Among the awards he received are the 38th Frederic Mompou International Award in Barcelona (2017), the second prize of IV International Composition Competition GMCL/Jorge Peixinho in Lisbon (2019) and the first prize of 2nd Borys Lyatoshynsky Composer Competition in Kharkiv (2021). In 2022, he won the second prize of 5th Mauricio Kagel Composition Competition in Vienna and obtained the second award of the XXXIII Young Composers Prize by the SGAE Foundation in Madrid.
In 2021/22 he was one of the composers in residence of the 'Postcolonial Recherche' project with Ensemble Recherche. In 2023, he won the call for scores by Continuum XXI for the creation of a work for historical instruments in the frame of the "Figures of madness and truth" project. The same year, he was one of the artists selected to develop a sound installation for the Moving FIreplaces festival in Romania, as part of the "Timișoara - the European Capital of Culture" program, and was selected for the Ulysses Journey program by Ulysses Network with a commission of a work for IEMA-Ensemble. In 2024, he was awarded a commission from DEBUT Classical Singing Competition in Germany to write a compulsory vocal composition for this contest.
He collaborated with and wrote works for such ensembles as Ensemble Musikfabrik, Ensemble Recherche, IEMA-Ensemble, Ensemble Mosaik, Barcelona Modern Ensemble, Bilbao Sinfonietta, Continuum XXI and Anima Vox Duo. Among the festivals where his music was performed were the Warsaw Autumn, Gaudeamus Muziekweek (Utrecht), impuls Festival and musikprotokoll (Graz), Dias de Música Electroacústica (Lisbon), VANG. Músicas en vanguardia (Madrid), Festival Mixtur (Barcelona), Moving Fireplaces (Timișoara) and Ukrainian Contemporary Music Festival (New York). His works were premiered in numerous countries such as Ukraine, Romania, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Serbia, Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Brazil and the USA.
