Play all audio recordingsArtur Akshelyan began his composition studies in Armenia at the Komitas State Conservatory under the guidance of V. Adjemian. In 2008, he relocated to Switzerland, where he continued his studies with Michael Jarrell and Luis Naon at the Haute Ecole de Musique in Geneva. He also attended masterclasses with renowned composers such as Ivan Fedele, Kaija Saariaho, Stefano Gervasoni, Sofia Gubaidulina, among others.
His works have been commissioned by various institutions and ensembles, including Ensemble Contrechamps (Geneva), Radio France (Paris), the Orpheus Competition (Switzerland), Dilijan Chamber Music Series (USA), Festival Flagey (Brussels), Foundation Minkoff (Geneva), and Ensemble Pre-Art (Zurich), among others.
His compositions have garnered several international prizes, including the Basel Composition Competition, the Geneva Composition Competition Grand Prix, and an honorable mention at Gaudeamus Muziekweek, along with recognition from Pre-Art and other awards. Most recently, Artur Akshelyan won the Boston New Music Initiative's 12th Annual Commissioning Competition and the Left Coast Composition Contest.
His music has been featured in various workshops and festivals, including June in Buffalo 2024 among others, as well as performed by renowned ensembles such as Ensemble Modern Lemanic, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Trio Saeitenwind, Arditti Quartet, Ensemble Divertimento, Ensemble Insomnio, and the Basel Symphony Orchestra, among others. Since 2018, he has taught at the Yerevan State Conservatory and the American University in Yerevan. As a conductor, he has collaborated with Ensemble Assonance. Currently, he is a doctoral candidate at Florida State University.
