“Estuário” is a quintet for flute, clarinet, violin, viola and violoncello written in 2007 when I was living in Canada. Based on the idea of the natural phenomenon of mixing salt water and freshwater (estuary), this work was written based on two different harmonic series. In opposition to this consonant pitch material, the entire quintet produces several noise sonorities achieved with extended instrumental techniques. For instance, during the first section all strings play on the bridge of their respective instrument, producing a type of white noise timbre. Flute and clarinet produce an airy sonority blowing through the instruments in several ways. In section two, clarinet brings a whole spectra of multiphonics. Finally, section three is devoted to pure sounds, highlighting upper partials of the second harmonic series. As occur with any estuary, both worlds influence one another; this idea was used as a compositional structure throughout the piece. The general development of this piece behaves as a gradual change from one harmonic series, blurred with some distorted sounds, to another one characterized by dissonant intervallic relationship.
