Notes on this piece Ananke is the final work in the suite Celestial Forms and Stories, recorded by Klangforum Wien and released on New Focus Recordings in 2022. The work is a cumulative reflection on the other four works in the suite, further exploring and developing their materials. And the work is also a final examination of the suite's foundational inspiration: Italo Calvino's writings on Ovid's Metamorphoses. The fates feature prominently in Metamorphoses, and so Ananke seemed to me to be an a propos reference for a final piece that focuses the entire suite on a more cosmic force in Ovid's landscape. Ananke is the primordial goddess of necessity, compulsion and inevitability. In the Orphic myth, she emerged self-formed at the dawn of creation and, with Chronos, formed the universe and the eternal passage of time.
