The Unbridgeable Gulf

The structure of the piece resembles a kind of endless chain of contradictory, yet in some ways very similar, comments ona problem with no solution. While writing it, I thought of the hornets' nest we had for several years in the hollow trunk of an old cherry tree in our garden. We lived in harmony only when we accepted that we could not approach each other, and that it was not in our power to get to know one another better. Yet, despite all this, we did not harm each other. Indeed, in those years there were far fewer flies around. Sometimes I miss the hornets. The sound of their nest was unique.
