Notes on this piece
Anamorphism, Hommage à Gustav Mahler (2013)
Mahler’s life and works have always been touching for me. His turbulent personal life, his ordeals as an artist with Jewish background on difficult beginning of 20th century, cost him losing jobs and immigration, personally attaches me an inevitable immigrant with Islamic background in these uneasy early years of 21st century. A life/legacy that was bound with pressure and tension. Anamorphism from the Greek (ana) ??? = upwards, back or again; "morphism" from the Greek (morphe) µ??f? = form, shape. In many fields of mathematics, morphism refers to a structure-preserving mapping from one mathematical structure to another. In the context of this piece it has connotations to “Emergence”, emergent structures and Gestalt as well. This piece is a continuation of my recent works and studies on “psychoacoustic”. Alongside to what the instruments play, we hear layers of additional “hidden” lines of sound with polyphonic characteristic. What we perceive as the sound is the result of a complicated set of interferences and interactions in certain frequencies. The result of high pressure and tension that varies throughout the piece. We witness the pressure and tension, yet we hear other that aren’t played. The piece is written for Moscow Contemporary Ensemble.
