Notes on this piece
Cantus
Cantus draws inspiration from the elegant depictions of aulos (conical woodwind) performances in ancient Greek and Roman art. Some auloi were single-reed instruments, and the preferred type was double-bodied. The modal material in the work is based on modified octatonicism, combined with elements from Balinese gamelan. Cantus is a praise hymn to the many faces of the soprano saxophone, and one can hope that the virtuosic qualities of the piece will befit a single instrument.
