‘In music my native tongue is the chorale’ – I had dropped this remark in an interview about a year ago. Subsequently an in-depth and introspective reflection about this statement was committed.
Compared to chorale preludes from various periods of music history my Choralvorspiel (hence not a chorale?) is more extensive in scope and features a less continuous discourse rich in contrast. Various aspects and methods of chorale settings are illuminated from different angles such as its rear sides, in fluidized states or in the process of breaking the mold.
Self-awareness tends to yield a certain degree of self-deprecation. May Brahms forgive me that he got involved at the end of the piece.
