Notes on this piece (commissioned by ensemble dissonArte: world premier at Music Village Festival-Greece on 24 August 2011; dissonArt, Conductor: Beat Furrer)The novel Hyperion or the Hermit in Greece by the German writer Hölderlin (1770-1843) inspires Geomatría del Amor. This is a series of movements for flexible groups of instruments. The movements develop different perspectives of the “romantic” approach to the musical poem. The titles of the pieces are derivations of references to the novel and a commentary reminiscent of the romantic idealization of love. Each movement explores independently a variety of symmetric structures, harmonic relations and melodic gestures. The structural development of the movements is directly influenced by the title of each movement. The romantic evocation of the title clashes, apparently, with the aesthetics employed in the musical discourse and explores the predisposition of a certain tendency towards an idealized beauty.
