My dissertation is fifteen, written by a younger and considerably more noodly composer. Periodically, I return to that unperformed landmark, but my attempts to revive it always hit the same wall: it’s no longer me. Nevertheless, there are gestures, textures, and licks that I still love, so I've begun recasting them as new works. Spare Parts D is about a set of seven pitches. As soon as this set is established, the work meanders away, at first chromatically and then microtonally. At its greatest deviation from the original set, the work begins to reestablish its gravitational center.
