Suspension Momentanée

Suspension Momentanée (Momentary suspension) is inspired by the series of artworks painted by modern Chinese artist Le Guo. The artworks reflect the internal conscious and unconscious emotion and feeling of the artist in respond to the external world while generally being characterized by unfinished and suspended dramatic gestures in which imaginary unfixed processes are unveiled in the mind of the spectator. The music begins with quiet and soft harmonics while gradually developing into constant repetitive gestures in association with various colors generated by the pipa and cello. After reaching the climax and tension, mysterious gestures with harmonics and glissanding techniques further consolidate the shape of the piece, informing the concept of suspension in the painting. The ending is characterized by aleatoric and indeterministic elements in which pipa solely finishes the music at the highest register.
