Notes on this piece Prelude: Dissent is concerned largely with the interaction, cooperative or otherwise, between instruments. Smaller units regularly form within the prevailing texture of the ensemble and begin to exert their will, seeking to influence the course of the ensemble as a whole. These units either engender increasing support from one or more of the other instruments, or are discouraged, interrupted, and suppressed. The use of bow overpressure plays an important roll in various sections of the piece, both as a timbral device and later in the piece as a strictly rhythmic element.
