Notes on this piece In ”Faces and Moon Splinters” I explore a sound world of fragile and intimate gestures, and contrasting expressive and harsh material. I am fascinated by the different ways of increasing and diminishing speed in our everyday life and the starting point of this piece is related to various types of movements. I chose four simple and contrasting examples; the wind, the bike, the squirrel and the machine and explored the character of their movements when starting and ending an action, and the strength of the friction required to produce each action. A “speed chart” of movement variations was created and I composed musical fragments which were influenced by this chart and F. García Lorca’s poem “the Fable and Round of the Three Friends”. The poem describes the miserable lives of Enrique, Lorenzo and Emilio and gives images of their life situations in the states of ‘being frozen’, ‘being buried’, and ‘burned’. The fragments were eventually into ten larger musical tableaux which were overlapped and juxtaposed in different ways to create the final collage form of the piece.
