Night in this composition is a symbol of a dark, mystical abyss that absorbs lives, and changes destinies. "Four Night Songs" has been written in the shadow of the war that has embraced Europe since Russia invaded Ukraine.
The four texts used in the composition are written by poets whose lives have inevitably been influenced by war or totalitarian regimes. Federico Garcia Lorca died in the Spanish civil war, Latvian poet Knuts Skujenieks has been imprisoned in the Soviet Union times for seven years living in brutal conditions, Paul Eluard has fought in both world wars. There is also Euripides, the ancient Greek poet, who was the eye-witness of the sufferings brought by the Troyan war.
Every poem has been composed in its original language – Spanish, Greek, Latvian, and French.
The piece has been written for Viktorija Pakalniece (soprano) and ensemble "Les Percussions de Strasbourg"
