Program Notes
The piece is inspired by the contemporary minimal artwork “Swing Low.” The saxophone part resembles the central curvy and wavy blue part in-between the outer two yellow trapezoid parts, symbolizing the piano part. The interaction between the two contrasting parts reflect the dynamic superimposition of pitch materials between the two instruments. The music delineates into three sections; the middle section shows substantial contrasts in terms of atmosphere and gesture with the outer parts: continuity and transformation in terms of rhythmic figure and pitches are exhibited, with each part initially starts with single pitches while gradually expanding the choices and variety of pitches as the music unfolds.
