Notes on this piece This piece, less than two minutes long, was my first attempt at using a stringed instrument to ‘distort' the sound of the piano. The quarter-tones are produced accurately as all four violin strings are tuned one quarter-tone higher or lower than normal, and most notes included in the piece are either open strings or natural harmonics.
The piece was composed for ‘HIBARI', a Great East Japan Earthquake aid project under which 100 Japanese and international composers submitted compositions, it was premiered in Helsinki by Linnea Hurttia (violin) and Akiko
Yokoyama (piano), and subsequently recorded project organizers Shungo Mise (violin) and Kaori Ohsuga (piano) and made available for purchase online.
