The Six Day Week is an autobiographical work – a work of confession. It
documents a near-fatal automobile accident I escaped from by about 15 inches. A large semi-truck driving recklessly hit the ramparts and flew into the air across four lanes, hitting each vehicle in front of me and smashing them to smithereens – a crack up.
I wanted to document this event in great detail the way Schoenberg documented his illness in his String Trio. In the aftermath of shock I had a de-realized conversation with a friend that was almost as traumatic as the accident and I realized I had lost a day in this week. I did a reading of the Tarot, which I had not done in twenty years. The cards came up: “The World,” but upside down, and “The Hanged Man,” which was right side up.
The Six Day Week is a panel in an ad hoc collection known as The Little Lyric Suite similar to the unfinished plan of Debussy’s Sonatas. My suite, however, which took up the entire year of 2019, is meant to be played consecutively over one evening. The Little Lyric Suite consists of the Interrupted Dance for guitar, The Studio for piano four-hands, The Six Day Week for string trio, and Relic Idol for the entire ensemble. The Six Day Week exists in two versions: one for string trio and electronics, and the other for string trio alone.
