Les nuages de l'espoir (The Clouds of Hope) is the central theme of a Zen poem written by Wang Wei during the middle-Tang Dynasty. The poem implicates that even though we encounter obstacles and difficulties in our life, these are just temporarily and would be ultimately replaced by our mindfulness and optimism if we could elevate our soulful energy.
In general, the music depicts the very essence of the poem in that continuous transformation of texture is the prominent feature in the first part, symbolizing when one strolling along the stream; the contrasting second part is rather sparse in character depicting the meditative moments when one sitting with clouds floating and uprising. The harmonic and melodic materials of the piece are infiltrated with diatonic and pentatonic substances, provoking the subtleties of the poetic scenes and Zen feeling in the poem.
