Notes on this piece
As Snow
The composer composed this piece for Antares Quartet in 2012. The inspiration came from his own experience that he walked alone in a landscape, where was full of snow. The sound of wind and the image of snow are transformed into different sonic ideas, which are used and developed in three sections. In the first section, there are intertwining gestures to create a highly contrapuntal texture. Musical elements are freely transferred to different instruments and registers. The music arrives at a climax and leads to the second section. This section is tranquil and has a simpler texture to contrast with the polyphonic network before. After that, the music gradually returns to the polyphonic sound world. Basically, it is the retelling of the first section. However, this time, the music becomes extremely economical to create a soft but aggressive sound to resemble the impression left by the cruel landscape.
