This piece is about the idea of being rooted in a place and how this
connection can be expressed through sound.
The work was commissioned by Masso Quartet, whose members shared with me, one by one, thoughts and sounds of the places they call home, all of which ended up in the piece in one way or another. The compositional process was full of different psychological exercises that allowed us to explore the connection between various ideas of “home” and sound. These psychological exercises also gave the piece its structure, which is marked by section titles with names that only have meaning to them.
The section titles are: “Kindah Tree”, “James River”, “Paper Birch”, and “Red Oak, Ash Junipers, and Grackles”.
The piece was premiered at Northwestern University in April of 2024.
