Notes on this piece In a spectacular four-volume epic, Hojyo no Umi, Yukio Mishima expresses his philosophical idea towards human beings' awareness and how significantly it dominates this world. Although this philosophy takes its foundation from one of the Mahayana Buddhism teachings, Mishima points out in his book that this world is?a reflection of our awareness, and there exists a number of worlds equivalent to the number of existing individuals. However, he adds that, since those worlds are constructed by our own and other individuals' awareness, they do not exist as entities but only as the embodiment of our minds. Thus, from this, it follows that there is neither presence of ourselves nor the world as substance; only nothingness exists. Construction of Humanity is a transitional process in the realization of this philosophical idea.
