Notes on this piece
Chant Funèbre
CHANT FUNÈBRE is a piece directly linked to sacred chant from the cante jondo flamenco tradition. These songs are a lament on life and death. The idea of the piece was to transpose the flamenco tradition from the martinetes (a piece for singer and anvil) to the violin, and to add violin techniques while preserving the flamenco tradition. The microtonal elements of the flamenco are also integrated on the violin with quarter tones linked to a bourdon bass on the open strings of the violin. The anvil reflects the origins of flamenco in the horse stable and provides a link to hard work and the difficulty of the human condition.
