Notes on this piece
Crossfades for ensemble
The idea for this piece came from the audio engineering technique of crossfades. On a sequencer software, or audio mixer, a fader is a tool that controls the level of an audio signal. Thus, it is possible to create smooth transitions of sounds by having a brief moment where they cross, one beginning and the other one ending. The crossfade technique may also be applied in the spatialization domain, as sounds can move around through different speakers creating a surround effect. In this piece, sounds performed on one instrument are crossed to another instrument, changing at the same time in color and in space. The aim is to have transitions of timbre and location of sounds, exploring the nuances that sounds may have as they move around the ensemble.
