In this string ensemble piece, composer tried to capture the nature of string sound in its fundamental tones and other natural harmonic overtones in different partial series. The title of this piece, “in a silent way” was intended to create a tranquil and sober mood and with providing transparent “glass-like” clear and crystal tone color. The combination of different harmonic partial made their own unique characters and sound and this is the major material in this piece. Besides using the higher partials of overtone series, there are non-string tone color were employed such as different types of col legno playing which carries quiet and percussive “wood” tone and an overlay of white noise effect. Composer is interested in finding the original sound source and various projecting ways from each instrument. The entire piece is in a single movement and lasts around 12 minutes.
