Notes on this piece In giving my composition the title “Return”, I meant to highlight the role of repetition in music as well as the phenomenon of repetition in and of itself, as it is often to be found over the course of music history. I am thinking here of various forms of repetition: from recurring brief musical passages, motifs and sounds all the way to the repetition of entire formal units (such as in sonata-allegro form). Repetitions can take place true to the original and consecutively, or to be shot through with other musical material. In “Return”, the repeats are neither particularly clear nor precisely localized. In composing it, I used other variants, variations in sound. As the title already suggests, “Return” confronts us with a situation in which the musical material reconstitutes itself following its temporary absence (or perhaps just its transformation?).
