Notes on this piece
…what goes up…
…what goes up… is a work centered on the juxtaposition of a constant, very slow, and almost uneasy descending harmonic gesture and a progressive overall widening and rising of the work’s pitch space. This process is almost entirely veiled, at the onset of the work, in thick gritty noise of the electric guitar, low strings, and baritone saxophone. Out of the noise elements comes both a pure harmonic character and a rhythmic beating, accentuated by an onslaught of woodblocks which propel the work to its highest point – a tense moment where the winds and strings, in their uppermost registers, finally free of noise elements, once again begin an uneasy and perilous descent, ever-so-slowly.
