Notes on this piece The reference here is not to the regular movement of the tide but to the occasional undertow which, unlike bird flight, has a violence of its own even when retreating. In addition, the movement is watched as it were from several shores at once, as if the composer were evaluating all the different transformations of the waves depending on place, time and weather. The word “grammaire” is used in the strict sense of a set of rules for ensuring the validity of a language and its intelligibility to all its users. The composer wonders, “How far is it possible to accelerate (ordecelerate) the movement of a wave without detracting from its essence? How can it be stated simultaneously, since waves are never unique, that a wave on the ebb is impelled by the flow of its successor which in its turn may be countered by the ebb of an earlier wave?”
