Notes on this piece My inspiration was drawn from the enigmatic Borobudur, a large Buddha monument in Indonesia. The monument consists of three parts: the base, the body and the top.Three different metaphorical sections are projected from each part, and it corresponds to three “realms” of Buddhist cosmology respectively, namely K?madh?tu, R?pajh?nas and Ar?pajh?nas. In K?madh?tu or World of Desires, a soundscape of intense atmosphere and detailed ornamental decoration is delineated. In R?pajh?nas or World of Forms, the momentum is suddenly shifted in which lively atmosphere is depicted with energetic rhythm. Freshness is injected with the percussion.Textural contrast is the main compositional technique, with the use of extended techniques to achieve a wider spectrum of possible orchestral colours. In Ar?pajh?nas or the Formless World, it is about the meditation of Nirvana. The music gradually fades away into nothingness. This work was selected as finalist of 2011 Singapore Chinese Orchestral Composition Competition.
