This Elegy for Strings entertains the juxtaposition of purely sonic elements (as abstract objects) to an expressive counterpart that also occurs in the piece, almost taking charge of certain passages that would be inconceivable from a viewpoint of sound as pure matter. Is music pure sound? Is it emotion? Is it just vibrations in time, or something else? These questions are an intrinsic part of this piece.
