Notes on this piece

Sicilienne was commissioned by Richard Sheldon on the occasion of Helen Sheldon's sixtieth birthday. Premiered at 6 Mountfort Crescent by Guy Johnston on October 22nd 2016 to a private audience of friends and family.

It was subsequently recorded by Guy Johnston on Sound and Music's Embedded programme as part of the Embedded: Radio 3's Composer in 3 project

in collaboration with BBC Radio 3.

First broadcast on 21 November 2016.

The cello part is scordatura, as indicated in the score. Open strings and natural harmonics should be allowed to ring on as long as possible to make the most of the instrument's transformed resonance.
