Notes on this piece Written in August 2020, 'proximity to the light' is a miniature for solo guitar. Employing a fragile and somewhat spectral temperament, the time-space notation used throughout opens the score up to a gestural collection of figures - a method adopted from studies of works by Takemitsu and Berio.
The constant contraction and expansion throughout - with both the proximity and tempo - and the somewhat indetermination - in both rhythmic and harmonic resultant pitch - allow for a series of dimensions to emerge on all fronts. Every performance will contain unpredictable outcomes and a variety of proximity impressions. Performers are encouraged to utilise the incandescent spectrum of colours of the instrument; making choices on string designation for convenience and also to capture the work's ethereal character.
This work is dedicated to and was workshopped by Australian guitarist Ken Murray - August/September, 2020.
