Notes on this piece Written as part of an ongoing collaboration with Szilárd Benes, tint:lens (2020/21) is a highly volatile and virtuosic venture into the quirks of the interior and exterior spectra available in writing for solo clarinet. Leaping, lunging and lurching through registers with vibrant and vehement velocity and fearlessly folds in ferocious timbral evocations to form a tapestry of jaunty outbursts. These are contrasted, or somewhat countered by short, meditative multiphonal moments that are littered throughout.
The work latently cycles through a seemingly unceasing variety of rhythmic ovations, which link to that of the activity of the 'ocular senses' we experience. In the modern world, we are surrounded by a vast array of stimulating optical occurrences. This piece captures only a small window of these activities and the dancing activities of our 'internal eyes'; a sort of process of translating the exterior into an interior (score) and then relaying it as a metamorphic manipulation; a transformation into musical outcomes.
