Notes on this piece
YEUN ELEZ
YEUN ELEZ was composed in 2011 for the vernissage of the painter Uwe Loebens. I was inspired by one of his paintings of a soul’s visions. Yeun Elez is a mythological place in the Celtic tradition and represents the end of the world and the beginning of the hell. In the Celtic tradition this place is located in the Finistère in Bretagne and is a door to the world of the souls and spirits. The piece also reflects Spanish Christian tradition with its use of flamenco techniques from the saeta tradition. The saeta is traditionally played for the commemoration of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and its music represents the pain that he suffered on the cross. I employ a special instrumental technique for the guitar, which involves the crossing of the two lowest strings so that they no longer produce an exact pitch but rather a sound resembling a snare drum.
