Using spectral techniques, « fear in the dark » explores live sound processing by feeding the sound from the quartet into reverbs and ring modulators, whose parameters are partially controlled by amplitude detectors.
A labyrinth of harmonies and melodic lines that continuously transform, projected into space; the metaphor of the quartet and its shadow.
The electronic consists of a Max patch (version 8.6 or higher required). A computer running Max 8.6 or later is required, as well as 4 condenser microphones, a sound card with at least 4 inputs and 4 outputs, and 4 speakers (at minimum, depending on the size of the hall) placed surrounding the audience.
For an ideal performance, the quartet is placed in the centre of the hall or room and the audience around them, surrounded by the loudspeakers. A more conventional setting is possible where the quartet plays on a stage and the audience is surrounded by loudspeakers.
