Wistful Fragments is a collaborative work conceived as part of a research-creation project that explores the relationship between the sonic memories of our lives and the emotions we associate to them. This mixed music composition, written for trumpet and live electronics, explores the concepts of memory and sonic space, highlighting the links between auditory perception, affect and the construction of a personal sonic identity.
The work is based on a collection of phonographic sounds — recordings captured in various everyday contexts, each linked to a particular auditory memory. These sounds, both in their original form and modified by electronic processes, form the fundamental material of the piece. They not only serve as a spatial background, but also act as narrative fragments, evoking intimate and collective stories through a richly nuanced timbral palette.
The structure of Wistful Fragments is shaped by the perception of timbre and sound space, two parameters that play a central role in the way memories come to life through sound. The trumpet, with its expressiveness and varied timbres, dialogues with electronic sounds to create a subtle interplay between presence and distance.
By creating a sonic portrait of several individuals, Wistful Fragments seeks to capture those fleeting, intangible moments when memory, emotion and sound converge.
