‘At Thornham Magna there are a ring of six church bells in G. As soon as I heard them and examined how their tuning differs from equal temperament I knew I had found the starting point for my festival commission. The relationship between the bells and the ensemble is central to the expressive language of this piece. As the bells are heard through the open doors and windows of the church a variety of textures and timbres take up their pitches and the music drifts between the hazily microtonal bell-centered world and equally tempered gestures before finally inhabiting a veiled place where the remembered resonances and gestures of the instruments mingle with the overtones of the bells.’ - S.C
At the edge of his dreams... was commissioned by Corentin Chassard for the Thornham Summer Festival
2017 and was premiered on July 22nd 2017 at Thornham Magna, Suffolk by the festival ensemble conducted by Jon Hargreaves.
