Notes on this piece The play is originally written by a Russian writer, Chekhov, Anton P. which is a rather short dramatic monologue. In the story, the main role of the play, Kissoff, upon being insisted by his wife, to deliver a public lecture on the harmful effects of tobacco though he himself smokes He invites those who are not prepared for a dry, scientific lecture to leave, but then keeps postponing the topic while he talks about how forceful and dominant his wife is.

The music of the opera is full of dramatic moments which reflect the expression, intonation and emotion behind the texts of the libretto. Traditional operatic techniques such as aria-like and recitative-like passages are employed and sometimes the amalgamation of those techniques is incorporated into the opera. Diatonic materials are highly utilized throughout the piece while sometimes blending with chromatic moments in some passages.
