While I was composing the piece, I had the opportunity to work closely with Ulrike and Javier and experiment with various recorders and tessituras. As a result, I was able to explore and go deeper into the formal procedures and ideas of the piece.
The text I have chosen is the Nunc Dimittis. The piece is characterized by recurring elements that function as the structural material for the development of the work; Tenor’s opening gesture of ascending half step glissandi (perfect 5th) and basset recorder’s gesture of descending half steps of glissandi (perfect 5th). The tenor sings slow glissandi and sequences of perfect fifths intervals in extreme high register in falsetto.
Nunc Dimittis for basset recorder and tenor was written in 2016 for UMS ‘N JIP. It was first performed on June 14, 2017, by UMS ‘N JIP at Kunstraum Walcheturm in Zürich, Switzerland.
