«When I was walking in the mountains with the Japanese man and began to hear the water, he said, ‘What is the sound of the waterfall?‘ ‘Silence,‘ he finally told me.»
(Jack Gilbert)
This piece is understood as a process, in which different materials that come from the idea of water sounds (especifically waterfalls) are slowly developing.
Pitches are almost unperceptible at the beginning, there is mostly white noise. Gradually more audible frequencies appear, building a sort of spectral harmony.
The work was comissioned by the Coramor Choir for the Rheinauer Konzerten 2018 under the theme „Wasser“ as a series of concerts performed in the Grisons (where the Rhein is born), Zurich, and finally in the Musikinsel Rheinau, near the famous Rhein falls, which inspired this piece.
