Notes on this piece
The Vanishing (2014)
for Mezzo Soprano and chamber orchestra
written for the Avanti! chamber orchestra
The piece is an imaginary sound anaparastasis of the last chapter of Lewis Carroll poem “The haunting of the Snark”. In the Poem an adventurous gang of surrealistic characters are haunting the imaginary mythic creature “Snark” in order to eat it. The mezzo-soprano “hunts” the creature by formulating the name “Snark”, trying to put the consonants “s”,”n”,”r”,”k” in the right order. Every instrument of the orchestra extends the sounding consonants of the mezzo-soprano with similar sounds. When the name “Snark” is formulated, as the poem narrates, someone is vanished because the “Snark” they have found is eventually a “Bojum”, another imaginary creature that eats instead of being eaten. The orchestra and the mezzo-soprano sonify this event.
