Luiz Casteloes

Brazilian composer, professor at Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (Brazil) since 2009, and postdoc researcher at Integra Lab (Birmingham Conservatoire, UK) in 2015-16. He holds degrees from Boston University (DMA, 2009), and UNIRIO (MM, 2004, and BM, 2001); highlights of awards, residencies, internships, and grants include: Ibermúsicas (2015), UFRJ School of Music (honorable mention, 2012), IRCAM (2011), CMMAS (2011), Boston University (2007), CAPES/Fulbright (2005-09), Festival Primeiro Plano (Best Sound Editing, 2003), and Funarte (1st prize in the XIV Brazilian Contemporary Music Biennial, 2001); recent performances/recordings of his music have been given by Roadrunner Trio (Netherlands, 2020), Ensemble Linea (France, 2019), Contemporary Music Basel (Switzerland, 2019), Aleph Gitarrenquartett (Spain, 2019), Ecce Ensemble (France, 2018), Ensemble Mise-En (South Korea, 2018 and 2017), Quartetto Maurice (Italy, 2016 and 2014), Mivos Quartet (Spain, 2015), Szlachta String Quintet (USA, 2015), Duo Promenade Sauvage (Italy, 2015), and Ensemble Arsenale (Italy, 2013); recent articles/chapters published in OM Composer’s Book Vol. 3 (France, 2016), Sonic Ideas (Mexico, 2015), El oído pensante (Argentina, 2013), and IRASM – International Review of the Aesthetics and Sociology of Music (Croatia, 2009). Research interests: Algorithmic Composition, Image-to-Music Conversion, and Brazilian Popular Music.
