Sérgio Rodrigo

Sérgio Rodrigo studied composition at the Music School at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. His principal teachers were Sérgio Freire, Oiliam Lanna e Rogério Vasconcelos.
Sérgio Rodrigo has participated in several national and international composition festivals, particularly the International Festival at Campos do Jordão (São Paulo), International Festival Artes Vertentes (Tiradentes), Festival Etchings of the Contemporary Music (Auvillar, France) Domaine Forget (Quebec, Canada) and Musicarte (Panamá) At these festivals he met composers such as Silvio Ferraz (Brazil), Dante Grela (Rosário, Argentina) Edgar Alandia (Perugia/Italy), Claude Ledoux (Paris/France), Lee Hyla (Chicago/USA) Stefano Gervasoni (Paris/France), Denys Bouliane (Quebec, Canada) John Rea (Quebec, Canada), Lasse Thoresen (Norway), Roberto Sierra (Puerto Rico) Samir Odeh-Tamimi (Palestine/Berlin) among others.
His work has received important awards in Brazil: a two-time winner of the Camargo Guarnieri composition award (one of the most important in the country) and also the “Tinta Fresca” orchestral composition award.
In 2011, "Aura", commissioned by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Minas Gerais, was played in three of the most important music halls in Brazil: Palácio das Artes in Minas Gerais, Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro and Teatro Municipal in São Paulo.
In 2012, his piece “Braids” has been awarded during the Festival Domaine Forget in Canada. After he received a commission by the Nouvel Ensemble Modern (NEM) for 2013.
During the first months of 2013 Sérgio Rodrigo was composer in residence at Festival Zeitkunst in Berlin.
