In 3 Perguntas ("3 questions"), linear polyphony unravels in dilations, contractions, suspensions and densifications, in crossings of opposed musical materials – between winds and percussion (specifically between pitched and unpitched sounds) and, at the same time and among each of these families, between brass and woodwind – and also the percussion skins.
More than musing on the relations between polyphonic thinking today and a thousand years ago, 3 Perguntas came as a meditation on Brecht’s poem Changing the wheel:
I sit by the roadside
The driver changes the wheel.
I do not like the place I have come from.
I do not like the place I am going to.
Why with impatience do I
Watch him changing the wheel?
