The University of New Mexico John Donald Robb Musical Trust commission gave me the opportunity to explore the Robb musical archive. As I listened to some of the recordings, I was struck by the physicality of the music and the urgency with which emotions were conveyed through physical and vocal gestures. This incredible repertoire is quite different from the musical culture I grew up with. However, in recent years, I have become increasingly drawn to alternative ways of experiencing sound, particularly within my own musical vocabulary, and especially through the use of electronic mediums.
The composition commission pushed me to explore my ability to transform, deconstruct, and rebuild sonic boundaries. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity, which has been both fascinating and inspiring.
The dance contains a hidden song of the Cochiti Indians, which serves as the backbone of the entire piece. This subtle recurring "theme" initially appears frequently, but as the composition progresses, it is gradually covered by layers of sound, eroded by other harmonies, rhythms, and less familiar tones. By the end, only a faint trace of the song remains audible, yet a shadow of its rhythmic structure persists, binding the Indian song to the piece until the final measure.
