My dissertation is fifteen, written by a younger and, in many ways, different composer. That orchestral piece, however, was never heard. Periodically, I return to it with the intention of revising it but always hit the same wall; as it’s no longer me, I don’t know how to proceed. Nevertheless, there are gestures, textures, and licks that I still love, so I'm recasting these fragments as new works. Spare Parts B is derived from the original percussion parts. They have been consolidated into a percussion quartet and the more awkward sounding rhythms have been revised. The resulting piece opens jittery and fragile, focusing on wood and skin timbres. This gradually gives way to louder passages and the incorporation of more and more more metallic sounds. The skin and wood timbres dramatically reassert themselves and then, the piece begins to disintegrate back into silence until everything comes to a stop.
