Descripción
Di Luce e Ombra
Chora Monastery in Istanbul is a fascinating place. It is known for its magnificent mosaics and frescoes. However, what strikes me most is how the space is dramatically effected by the light which comes through its domes and diffuses into each chamber. So this piece grew out from my experience of this unique space. It consists of many fragments and each one represents each chamber of the monastery. These fragments are proportional to the dimensions of each chamber.
Harmonic material is drawn from two distinct sources: Harmonic series and Byzantine modes (more specifically enharmonic genera). Each material forms its own section, which alternate throughout the piece. The title of the piece, …of light and shadow also refers to these alternating sections. The parts where only harmonics are used possess an ethereal quality and the ones with the Byzantine harmonies are somber and earthly. String instruments use a special scordatura corresponding to the harmonics of a low C spectrum.
