Pigí

"Pigí" (2023) is based upon a family video of my father surrounded by rural workers who played, sang, and danced to samba-de-roda, in Sertão of Bahia, Brazil, at the beginning of the 1990s. Pigí was how they used to call these rounds of samba, which happened after an exhaustive day of work on preparing the soil, planting, or reaping. Lines of many types flee from that scene captured on an old VHS tape: lines of sounds, spectra analyzed, resynthesized, interpreted, and translated to notated harmonies, musical cells, and gestures; lines of rhythms, transformed along the tapestry of the music; lines of melodies that fulfill the score in kind of literal terms here and there; lines of memories, forces of life through time, as I was present to that kind of cultural phenomenon, as an infant.
