Some people say... was written during the summer 2009 in Michelstadt, Germany. The focal point of the piece is based on the “Dead Sea Scrolls”. These consist of roughly 1000 texts of great religious and historical significance, including texts from the Hebrew Bible.
In order to relate this topic musically, the melody “How beautiful are the nights in Canaan” was employed. This ancient Beduin folk melody was transcribed in the 1950s by a folk composer and poet Emanuel Zamir, who also wrote the lyrics to it. The Hebrew name of this melody is "Ma Yafim Haleylot Bichena'an".
Technically, the first two measures of "Ma Yafim Haleylot Bichena'an” were used as reference to write this entire piece. This involves a perfect fifth interval and a small 5 note melodic motive, developed through different frameworks in both instruments.
Transpositions, circular permutations and controlled improvisations, are elements that create a more organic transformation of these few references.
The overall form of this piece is completely established by the form of "Ma Yafim Haleylot Bichena'an”.
