Notes sur cette pièce Commissioned by French Ministry of Culture and Communication.
The title consists of two words with contradictory meaning: “open” and “secret”. It implies that sometimes though the things are well-known and available to everyone, in reality very few people can truly understand the profound and hidden meaning beyond the appearance. As Jesus said in Gospel of Mark: “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those outsiders everything is said in parables”. Another example is a Chinese saying:" Spirit is difficult to imitate, forms are easy to copy”.
The piece is constructed by four main parts (ABCA). It puts emphasis on organic combination of diverse sound colours and playing techniques between solo saxophone and Chinese instruments. While respecting their different characteristics of expression, I try to integrate Western and Eastern musical language in a harmonious way.
