Strokkur is a short piece for a large orchestra, written in 2015, during my studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory. The piece depicts an eruption of Strokkur, one of Iceland's most famous geysers. Even though it is not the largest geyser in Iceland it is undoubtedly the most active one, erupting every 6-10 minutes, and due to it’s frequent eruptions it is sometimes dubbed the “world’s most reliable geyser”.
The geyser provides an interesting form for a musical composition. On the surface level it has a very clear structure with an obvious end goal, but at the same time there's a lot of space for excitement and tension to build up while we wait for the eventual eruption. My main focus was to create various sound textures to imitate the geyser, both aurally and visually, and to do so I used many unusual instrumental combination as well as various extended techniques.
